Challenge

Shared lab spaces have 10x the logistics of a typical coworking space. The team at Biolabs in North Carolina used upwards of 7 different tech platforms to manage the space. And there was no data to be had.

Results

Biolabs NC started using Coworks space management software and immediately realized it solved all the issues. President Ed Field was the first of several Biolabs locations to implement the solution.

"We were using seven different things to do everything we needed. And then we saw this app, and we're like, wow, this could do it all in one place."

About Biolabs NC

BioLabs North Carolina operates three shared laboratory spaces across Durham and Chapel Hill.

The shared lab space provides early-stage biotech companies with over $3 million worth of equipment and a fully operational lab infrastructure they can access month-to-month.

Over eight years, Biolabs NC has incubated about 150 companies—with 75% being direct spin-outs from Duke University, UNC, or NC State.

The model works because companies can focus entirely on science rather than lab operations, growing incrementally from 3 to 12 people without massive capital jumps, then typically graduate to their own facilities within 18-24 months.

As President Ed Field puts it: "If you're successful, you will only be here 18 to 24 months—this is not your endpoint, this is your beginning point."
